Dell P2422H Review | A Worth It Casual Screen?

Our Conclusion

The Dell P2422H is a great find if you can get it for under $200, offering USB connections and versatile stand adjustments at a budget-friendly price. However, if you’re looking for higher specs like a 75hz refresh rate or greater peak brightness, you might want to consider the Dell S2721HN or the LG 24GN600-B for better responsiveness. These options provide more advanced features while still being reasonably priced.

In the past, the classification of a casual monitor was primarily based on its refresh rate, as highlighted in previous gaming monitor reviews. A 144Hz display instantly became synonymous with a gaming monitor.

However, as more casual users now seek higher refresh rates, additional features are being taken into consideration to distinguish between gaming and non-gaming monitors.

In today’s article, we’ll be taking a closer look at the Dell P2422H, a new monitor offering impressive features within its price range. We’ll assess whether it’s a worthwhile purchase at this time. So, without any further delay, let’s dive into the Dell P2422H Review.

  • July 24, 2023 Update: We compared it to some of the recent models on the market, taking its current price into consideration. Corrected typos and added a table.

Design

When it comes to aesthetics, this monitor belongs to our favored DELL display series. It bears a striking resemblance to other screens like the DELL P2222H and the Dell U2722D, but it’s a design that feels fresh and not overdone.

We were a bit disappointed to find that it’s not as slim as some of the other Dell options, which would have been ideal for an office setup. However, with its measurements of ‎21.17 x 7.05 x 19.53 inches, it still fits in line with the current trend for this type of screen.

Staying true to Dell’s commitment to quality materials, this display boasts reliability that’s on par with the high-end Dell U2722D, although it falls in a more budget-friendly range.

In line with contemporary design trends, the screen features borderless bezels, giving it a sleek and modern look while also maximizing screen real estate.

What sets this monitor apart in its price range is the extensive range of adjustments available on its stand. You can easily adjust the height, tilt, swivel, and pivot, catering to those seeking optimal viewing angles and ergonomic comfort.

It’s worth mentioning that this monitor supports VESA mounting, providing the flexibility to mount it on the wall—a significant advantage for those looking to save desk space. However, it lacks built-in speakers, which may be a drawback for some users who rely on monitor audio.

One standout feature is the inclusion of a joystick, which greatly enhances navigation through the display’s menu, offering a convenient and user-friendly experience.

So, considering all of that, we can say this is a really solid monitor when it comes to aesthetics. It isn’t as flashy as some of the high-end gaming models, while also being rather modern, contrary to most part of monitors in the budget category.

Connectors

Also, on the part of connectors, the Dell P2422H is still impressing us including:

1 x HDMI 1.4 (HDCP 1.4)
1 x DisplayPort 1.2 (HDCP 1.4)
1 x VGA
1 x SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps (USB3.2 Gen 1) upstream
4 x SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps (USB3.2 Gen 1)

If this monitor keeps with the good features like that, it is most likely to be another great contender for the best budget monitors in 2023.

Features

Panel type

IPS panels are now found in nearly every low-cost monitor aimed at casual users. The reasons for this are revealed by the advantages that the IPS provides for us.

This panel is already the foundation for a screen with precise colors. Aside from that, it has excellent viewing angles, allowing you to see the images with great precision.

On the other hand, it has one of the slowest response time ratios, putting it in the non-gaming group. This panel is also notorious for frequent IPS glowing, which is a pretty typical issue with inexpensive IPS panels, depending on the construction quality of such.

Fortunately, as the Dell manufacturer is keeping with quality on its recent models, this one has little to no IPS glowing, so you can rest assured about this concern.

Brightness

Aside from that, on a low-cost monitor like this one, the IPS panel’s wide viewing angles are typically coupled with a poor brightness ratio.

They chose to utilize only 250 nits for this display, which is sufficient for the vast majority of users but can be quite low in some conditions.

For example, suppose you plan to use this display primarily during the day and sunlight will be shining on it regularly at some point. In that case, this brightness ratio may impede the reproduction of clear and accurate images.

A monitor with a greater peak brightness could be advised in this case. Among cheap choices for such, you have the Dell S2721HN, currently at basically the same price as this one, and with similar features.

Refresh rate and Response time

The 75Hz refresh rate adds another common touch to screens tailored for a laid-back, casual experience. While it may lack the fluidity of a smooth 144hz one, it still suffices for web browsing and similar tasks.

What’s truly remarkable is how affordable it is to upgrade from a 60Hz screen to the smoother 75Hz panel, making it the go-to choice for most manufacturers producing casual monitors these days.

However, the decision to stick with 60Hz for this specific monitor remains a bit puzzling, potentially becoming a significant drawback depending on other features and pricing. Although it won’t greatly impact your overall experience, it does influence the cost-effectiveness ratio.

Beyond that, they’ve equipped this monitor with an 8ms response time, boasting a gray-to-gray ratio of up to 5ms.

For the casual user, reaction time isn’t a major concern since it yields little difference in day-to-day use.

Image Overall Quality

Last but certainly not least, let’s dive into the heart of this screen and see if it truly delivers those coveted professional color levels.

The Dell P2422H boasts a 24-inch 1080p display with a decent PPI ratio, ensuring bright and crystal-clear visuals that elevate your overall experience. Unlike larger 27-inch 1080p monitors, the 24-inch size is a smart choice, preventing stretched pixels and that pesky blurry effect.

However, when it comes to color accuracy, this monitor falls short of setting a new standard. With a 99 percent sRGB color gamut and the ability to handle 16 million colors, it does offer a wide range of hues, but it might not meet the expectations of seasoned professionals. The colors lack that vibrant punch, but with some red and green calibration, you can nudge them toward a more pleasing appearance that suits your preferences. Out of the box, the colors may seem a tad washed out, but with a simple tweak in the red tones, it can easily reach a satisfactory level for everyday use.

But here’s the deal: If your work demands a professional-grade monitor for media editing and color precision, this might not be the one for you. You might need to consider investing a bit more in a monitor like the Dell U2722D to get that top-tier performance.

On the other hand, if sharpness is your priority, perhaps a 27-inch 1440p monitor will do the trick for you.

To sum it all up, considering its current price point, this monitor delivers the expected image quality—neither mind-blowing nor disappointing, just right where you’d expect it to be.

When to buy it

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly monitor with great stand adjustments and the convenience of USB ports, the Dell P2422H is an excellent option. These features really set it apart, as it’s not common to find such capabilities on affordable monitors.

However, it’s worth noting that this monitor has a refresh rate of only 60hz and doesn’t come with built-in speakers, which might be a downside for some users. If that’s the case, you might want to consider checking out the Dell S2721HN or the DELL P2222H to see which one better suits your needs.
