Is the RTX 2070 Super worth it? | Nvidia RTX 2070 Super Review

The Nvidia card launched in 2019 to compete directly with the Rx 5700 XT, seeing that the RTX 2070 vanilla wouldn’t be able to beat this out in performance. Nvidia Geforce Rtx 2070 Super, which some say is the best 1440p Graphics card at the moment, and we’ll check here if it is really true.

With AMD claiming the RX 5700 XT to have 10% more performance than the Nvidia RTX 2070, costing even lesser, Nvidia opted to counter-attack with the RTX 2070S. Said and done, the RTX 2070 Super was released, costing $500 to bring the RX 5700XT out of the market. And the Rx 5700 XT was released at $450.

Now, though, you may be asking: Well, if the RTX 2070S was released costing even more than the RX 5700XT, then it was a total failure to counterattack. However, it may not have been a complete fail since the prices of both are very similar nowadays, and the RTX 2070S also has better specs.

Furthermore, we will take two cards to determine in this review which one is the best for 1440p games. One of them is the RX 5700 XT, which has almost the same performance as the RTX 2070 Super and costs less.

Since the RTX 2070S also has a similar performance to that, and it is the one on which the RTX 2070 Super was based, the other selected card is the famous: RTX 2070. So, we’ll find out today the main differences between the RTX 2070 and RTX 2070S and the RX 5700XT. Benchmark tests with the RTX 2070S and the RX 5700XT will be used to determine which one is the best 1440p card as well. Follow below.

Design

Before we start with the tests, let’s head now to some different brand’s design of this card.

RX 5700XT vs RTX 2070 Super

Starting with the technical specifications of both, the RTX 2070 S has the Turing architecture with 12nm of lithography and 13,600 million transistors, as the RX 5700XT features the RDNA 1.0 architecture and 7nm of lithography and 10.3 B transistors.

So here we can see that even with a higher nanometer, the RTX 2070 Super, Turing architecture was able to get ahead, using more transistors for this chip. By the way, In terms of voltage consumption, Turing is coming up again, with just 215 W of energy usage, as the RDNA 1.0, even with 7nm, has 225 W of TDP.

Speaking of CUDA cores or Stream processors, both cards own the same 2560. Further, memory-wise, again, both features the same GDDR6, 8 GB, 256 bit of memory bus, 448.0 GB/s of Bandwidth.

Last, about the clock. On the base clock, they both are, again, with the same 1605 MHz. However, the RX 5700XT can go up to 1905 MHz on the boost clock. As the RTX 2070 is only able to reach out to 1770 MHz. Another plus point to the RTX 2070 S is that it has dedicated ray-tracing hardware, enabling fast real-time ray tracing, with accurate shadows, reflections, refractions, and global illumination.

RTX 2070 vs RTX 2070S

The only specs that remain the same from the RTX 2070 to the RTX 2070S are the memory specifications said above. The clock and boost clock was increased from 1410 MHz up to 1620 MHz to 1605 MHz up to 1770 MHz.

Also, they added more transistors, going from 10,800 million on the RTX 2070 to 13,600 million on the RTX 2070 S. Further, the CUDA cores went from 2304 to 2560. Summing things up, Nvidia really created an improved version of the RTX 2070 by adding and summing more of almost all features.

Games benchmarks

We’ll test on an I7 10900KF, 16 GB RAM running on 3600Mhz, Gamemax 650W power supply with 80 plus bronze label. All games in 1440p.

Fortunately, the RTX 2070 Super was able to offer solid results in several games during tests. Moreover, the 5700 XT was unexpectedly able to reach higher FPS than the RTX 2070S in some games such as Battlefield V, and the Resident Evil 3 Remake, even in 1440p. Both may be the kind of “AMD” games that run better on AMD cards in general. Besides, there was no noticeable improvement in FPS, which does not seem to worth the plus 50 bucks.

However, this related price was the launch one; things are different now, way more expensive indeed. Which means that, before you pick one, you will first have to check out the price deals of both.

This card really surprised me by maintaining above 60 FPS, even switching to 4k resolution in some games such as Call of duty Warzone.

Which one is the best 1440p gaming

The RTX 2070 Super is indeed the best choice for 1440p gaming without regarding the prices of both, just the results. This one is also the best option if you have a 75hz or more monitor since you will reach this mark with the RTX 2070 Super that you wouldn’t be able to reach out with the RX 5700XT without lowering the graphics quality. Also, not said that you can enable ray tracing in some games with the 2070S.

Is the RTX 2070 Super worth it?

Undoubtedly, the RTX 2070 Super is a great card, with excellent performance for 1440p games. However, it does not have a great improvement in FPS concerning the RX 5700XT. The average plus FPS between both in the presented benchmark tests is 4. Probably you won’t like to spend 50 bucks more to have 4 FPS. However, this might be worth it if you have a G-sync monitor with 75hz and you want to use the Ray tracing feature.

When to buy it

If you have an old graphics card which has not the power to run your games in 1440p with high frame rates, the RTX 2070S is surely a good choice.

When not to

If you want to play in 1080p or already have a card like RTX 2060 Super or the RTX 2070, this one won’t be a great upgrade.
